Meetings
Visiting other collections and breeders is a vital way to share knowledge.
Members are encouraged to work together to share bloodlines and keep accurate records of breeding stock.
Healthcare
Every species has unique needs, but all aspects of responsible aviculture are covered by the five freedoms and five DOMAINS.
- Freedom from hunger and thirst: by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour. NUTRITION
- Freedom from discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. ENVIRONMENT
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease: by prevention through rapid diagnosis and treatment. HEALTH
- Freedom to express normal behaviour: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind. BEHAVIOUR
- Freedom from fear and distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. MENTAL STATE
In 1965, a British parliamentary enquiry investigated the welfare of animals in intensive livestock production systems. The principles have been distilled, and since 1993, these have been accepted worldwide as a core for good practice.
