Goals
You are here: Aviornis UK / About / Goals
We aim
- To provide a link between national and international bodies with similar core values, both private and public. Conserving viable populations of non-domestic birds in protected environments for the public benefit.
- To promote education by raising awareness and knowledge about birds, habitat and conservation.
- To promote the breeding and first-class welfare of birds by organising member meetings.
- To provide services and information to the members who keep and breed, in particular those birds listed in ‘About Aviornis’, but not exclusively, so that the skills required for conserving species are maintained.
- To advance knowledge of individual bird classes and areas of conservation concern through focus groups.
- To provide a link between national and international bodies with similar core values, both private and public. Conserving viable populations of non-domestic birds in protected environments for the public benefit.
- To administer captive population counts and stud books to maintain viable genetic diversity within the UK, and worldwide when deemed necessary.
- To document significant bird collections of conservation concern, where derogation from culling may be appropriate in the event of a disease outbreak.
- To promote the exchange of birds among the members and those of other associations, institutions or scientific organisations with similar objectives.
- To provide certified rings which conform to international standards.
- To organise exchange fairs with the aim of broadening genetic diversity.
- To facilitate/support or co-organise member involvement in conservation breeding and reintroduction projects.
- To inspire aviculturists of the future to uphold these core values.
- To provide effective support and co-operation to scientifically justified programs for the conservation of, among others, the bird orders listed in ‘About Aviornis’.
Buffer populations
Due to threats such as the ongoing deforestation of the tropical and subtropical rainforests and the current political instability in the countries of origin, the hope of survival for many species remains in the creation of national parks or buffer zones, where they are under targeted protection for their survival.
It is therefore of the utmost importance that buffer populations exist, from which birds bred in a protected environment can be made available as a supplement to the wild population, saving the species from extinction. Aviculture is the only way to achieve these buffer populations. The avicultural hobby is a valuable and essential part of the conservation of species that are threatened with extinction in their natural habitat.
Bird breeders have an extensive and valuable arsenal of study material in their aviaries. The aviaries are extremely suitable places for scientific research. Each aviary forms an enclosed space, where birds can be studied, whether or not in varying circumstances. Breeding experiences provide an insight into the adaptability of the species to a different environment.
Responsible breeding of birds in a protected environment, in order to have sufficient birds available to return to nature in the event of possible extinction in the wild, is not only seen as a goal but also as a duty.
Breeding birds is a sustainable form of conservation and a way to prevent their disappearance. It is culturally and scientifically justified.
