The White Eared Pheasant Crossoptilon crossoptilon, found in the Himalayas, is a red list near threatened species because although it has a large range there is only limited habitat available.
An extremely hardy bird, they are easily maintained in a spacious aviary as long as they have access to an enclosed dry area for roosting. They are great diggers so only the toughest plants will survive their attentions.
Of the Eared Species in captivity (White, Blue and Brown Eared) they are the least commonly bred possibly due to a limited gene pool.
This is a species that requires a concerted effort by aviculturists to increase the viability of the remaining stock to lessen the decline in numbers of this species.
