The Ringed Teal (Callonetta leucophrys) is one of the species featured in Aviornis UK’s next magazine, which will be available mid-August.
It is a small teal with a total length of only 35 to 38 cm. They are found in an area of more than 4 million square kilometers in the middle of South America. Unlike ducks from the Northern Hemisphere, they do not have an eclipse plumage, which means that they look the same all year round.
Ringed Teal are a perfect species to be kept unpinioned in an aviary. Their wings are beautifully coloured with an oval-shaped white patch and a bright green mirror, which only becomes really visible when they are flying. They are lively and are tolerant to other birds.
Ringed Teal are very easy to keep and breed. They are not fully hardy though. If it freezes too hard, they should be placed in an indoor shelter. Running water and shallow standing places in the water are necessary to get them through less severe frost when they are outside.
