Bird families listed in Aviornis UK activities include the corvids – the largest of the passerines. There are 8 wild species here can you name them?
A charismatic foreign member is the Plush-crested Jay Cyanocorax chrysops. Of all the South American jays, it is the one with the largest distribution area.
With a wide vocabulary, from shrill calls to whistling sounds, they also mimic other birds around them.
They live in trees and are reluctant to fly over open environments. Plush-cresteds live in flocks and are noisy and active. Though suspicious and wary, they are curious and will exploit any food source.
In aviculture, their behaviour throughout the year is a daily amazement. Watch out for young chicks and eggs of small species though, being omnivorous these jays pose a risk! It is best to provide them with an aviary for themselves.
Good solid perches are best, because they use their beak like a pick to mark their territory or ‘impress’ their female after a shrill ‘piu piu’. There is still much to learn about this species in aviculture, their reproduction is complicated and difficult, but this spices up our hobby.
