The Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus is a fantastic plover with great character.
The plumage being identical for male and female makes it almost impossible to tell the sexes apart. They are a wonderful addition to any collection, with an unmistakable call and superb agility in flight, these birds mix perfectly well with other species.
Northern Lapwing are prolific breeders, laying up to 4 perfectly camouflaged eggs in a clutch. The male will construct several scrapes before the female choses which one to lay her clutch in. Chicks are well protected by the parents and their cryptic colouring means they can disappear very quickly from vision: with their natural response to lay low and very still with fantastic camouflaged pattern. Chicks are easy to rear, either artificially, or with parents. These busy chicks grow quickly and are are always on the go. Independent from the moment they hatch, they are a wonderful addition to any aviculturist’s collection.
A bird that is in real decline in the UK and one that needs to be nurtured for future generations.
Red-listed due to breeding & wintering population declines.
