The Montezuma Quail inhabits open forest areas in America from Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas south to Oaxaca, Mexico.
With a size of 20 to 22 cm, this quail is almost the same size as the Northern Bobwhite.
Montezuma Quail occur in groups of an average of 7 or 8, never more than 25 birds, in an area usually no more than 6 ha.
At night, these quail form a circle like Northern Bobwhites do, usually around a rock or clump of grass.
In the dry season, the food mainly consists of bulbs and tubers, and insects in the rain season.
The dome-shaped nest of grass stems and oak leaves often has a side entrance which is well hidden by a bundle of grass stems, overhanging like a little door which falls back into place each time a bird enters or leaves the nest.
The Montezuma Quail is considered ‘Least Concern’. The total population may consist of more than 500,000 birds.
