The Lesser Scaup Aythya affinis, is a small North American diving duck. It is often hard to distinguish from the Greater Scaup due to their similarities.
The Lesser Scaup is a smaller bird generally, and the drakes have a purple sheen to their head with a blue bill and black nail on the tip.
This is a species that tends to get overlooked in aviculture.
Aviornis has a project to determine who still keeps Lesser Scaups, to help sustain the purity of the captive population in aviculture as the risk of interbreeding with other species is high and to help establish unrelated breeding pairs.
If you would like to get more information about this project, please reply to this post or send an e-mail to Johan at editor@aviornis.uk.
