One of Aviornis UK’s key goals is to promote education by raising awareness and knowledge about birds, habitat and conservation.
Breeding birds is a sustainable form of conservation and a way to prevent their disappearance. It is culturally and scientifically justified. Thorough documentation of maintained species, through the Aviornis ringing scheme and studbooks, can identifiy species in aviculture which are in decline and need our support.
Considered to be the one of the most endangered ducks in the world, Laysan Ducks were originally from Laysan Island. Some of the population was translocated to Midway Atoll to ensure a stable population existed elsewhere in case something happened to those on Laysan.
Our thanks to the Friends of Midway Atoll National Nature Reserve.
