Preserving the purity of bird species is one of the objectives of Aviornis. A few years ago, it had become quite difficult to find pure Chinese Painted Quail (Coturnix chinensis). That is why, within Aviornis, a number of members focus on breeding pure specimens of this species.
The Chinese Painted Quail is one of the smallest Galliformes. It is found in India, Southeast Asia and Australia.
In aviaries, these little quail are often kept as hoovers on the floor to clean up thrown out seeds from tropical birds, for example. But this undervalues these very lively quail.
It is often said that the breeding instinct has disappeared in many quail species in protected environment. When you give quail, including the Chinese Painted Quail, enough space and some cover, these beautiful little quail will start breeding anyway. The chicks, which hatch after about 16 days, are only the size of a bumblebee. The mesh size of the aviary net must therefore be small enough to prevent them from escaping.
Chinese Painted Quail can be kept in pairs or in small groups of one male with several females.
An underrated, beautiful little bird that deserves a place in your aviaries!
