The UK situation is affecting all bird keepers, particularly those with galliformes and anseriformes. Since 8th November 2021, gatherings of these species have been banned.
Increasingly the way we keep birds in aviculture here looks to be under threat. We will adapt, and make our facilities more secure. Aviary design, welfare and traceability through ringing will be key to the survival of private collections.
As with any disease, stress makes the body more susceptible, and close proximity enables easier spread. One reason why many of our nesting seabirds have been affected this year, and mass aggregations of birds post migration will have lost condition after their journeys. Bird flu is spread from bird to bird by direct contact with body fluids and faeces. It can also be spread by the feet of dogs, vermin, dirty vehicles and on clothing and footwear.
