With a full housing order scheduled for England next Monday, act now to prevent the disease entering your facility.
• Stock movements — quite frankly, it’s not worth the risk
• Netting — time to up our biosecurity game
• Discourage wild birds every way possible
• Don’t use rainwater collected off the roof
• Use foot dips (Defra approved and at the right dilution) and replace solution regularly
• Cover foot dips to keep out rain and bird faeces
• Include dips between pens and consider creating a ‘firebreak’
• Adapt your feeding regime to stop wild birds being attracted
• Keep dedicated clothing; coveralls, boots, overshoes/slips overalls
• Keep on top of pest control
• Keep all feed and bedding under cover
• Feed at night to avoid encouraging any wild birds coming down to your collection
• Minimise stress wherever possible
Remember — all birds can get bird flu, but not all species present symptoms even when they are shedding virus, and young stock are more vulnerable than older birds.
